Professor Sanjay Mohanty and his team at UCLA recently presented their interesting findings at the American Chemical Society (ACS) Spring Meeting 2025.
โAn average of 100 and as many as 637 microplastics can be released into saliva per gram of gum.โ
A simple calculation of this is that you can ingest up to 3000 microplastics from a single piece of gum (based on 2-6 grams) ๐จ.
๐งช Where do microplastics come from?
Chewing gum is usually made of the following ingredients
Rubber base: vegetable polymer or petroleum-based synthetic rubber.
Additives: sweeteners, flavors, etc.
Researchers tested five different brands of gum, both natural and synthetic, and found that most gum released microplastics into saliva within two minutes, and 94% of the total amount within eight minutes.
The microplastics are not caused by enzymes in saliva, but by โchewing frictionโ.
๐จ What are the effects of microplastics on the human body?
The jury is still out, but some studies have suggested the following associations
Increased risk of dementia and brain disease
Increased risk of heart disease and stroke
Decreased hearing and balance
Decreased male reproductive health

โ Tips for chewing gum to stay healthy
Chew a piece longer, not often!
Chewing the same piece of gum for a longer period of time reduces the release of microplastics, rather than constantly chewing a new piece.
Choose a natural gum

Reduce mindless chewing
It's a great way to relieve stress and freshen your breath, but don't do it too often.
