Did you know North Korea existed during the Three Kingdoms period in China, not just the one led by Kim Il Sung? Cao Cao, Liu Bei, and Sun Quan are all familiar names, right?(in korean, both cases pronounced by bookhan!)

The Story of 'Bei Han (北漢)' in Chinese History

If Cao Cao's descendants had seen this, they might have sighed...! After the Three Kingdoms era ended, China entered a period of chaos, known as the Five Dynasties and Ten Kingdoms period! One of the kingdoms that emerged during this time was 'Bei Han (北漢)'.

• Period: 951 AD - 979 AD
• Location: Present-day Taiyuan, Shanxi Province, China
• Founder: Liu Chong (劉崇)

Wait, Liu? Could he be a descendant of Liu Bei...? (Unfortunately, there is no direct blood relation ) Liu Chong, who founded Bei Han, was a virtuous and brave leader, much like Liu Bei. His dedication to fighting for his people against the immense pressure from the Later Zhou dynasty resembled Liu Bei's efforts for Shu Han.

• Yang Ye, Bei Han's 'Guan Yu'?

Yang Ye, a renowned general of Bei Han, was a valiant and loyal warrior, much like Guan Yu. He defended Bei Han with his exceptional martial skills in numerous battles, reminiscent of Guan Yu's exploits on the battlefield.

• Han Inmei, Bei Han's 'Zhang Fei'?

Han Inmei, a general of Bei Han, was a courageous and impulsive warrior, much like Zhang Fei. He led Bei Han's victories by fearlessly breaking through enemy lines. His boldness echoed Zhang Fei's roaring charges against his foes.

• Bei Han's Strategists, 'Zhuge Liang'?

Bei Han had many brilliant strategists who overcame crises with their exceptional tactics, much like Zhuge Liang. Their wisdom was similar to Zhuge Liang's strategies, such as the fire attack at the Battle of Red Cliffs.

The Atmosphere of the Time

• To the north, the powerful Liao dynasty (Khitan).
• To the south, the rising power of the Song dynasty.

Caught between these two, Bei Han endured like an isolated kingdom before ultimately being absorbed by the Song dynasty.

Cao Cao might have scoffed, "Well, at least I unified the Central Plains!" Liu Bei might have said, "It's still gratifying that a Liu became a king!"

Though the names are similar, they are entirely different countries!

• Location: Northern part of the Korean Peninsula
• Foundation: 1948, established by Kim Il Sung
• Current Status: A key nation that continues to significantly impact international relations.

While China's 'Bei Han (北漢)' succumbed to pressure and disappeared, the Korean Peninsula's 'North Korea (北韓)' remains and continues to draw global attention.

이때 등장한 나라 중 하나가 바로 ‘북한(北漢)’입니다.
