**Tsunami Alert! "I know how to evacuate, but how do I move my mom?" - Tips for evacuating patients with mobility issues in emergencies**

Everyone, hearing sudden disaster news must have made your heart sink. Particularly, if you have a family member who is bedridden or has difficulty moving, you may find yourself thinking, "I can escape somehow, but how do I help my mom (or dad) evacuate?" While general disaster evacuation guidelines are known, evacuating alongside a patient requires much more complex and delicate preparation.

The recent tsunami warning in Alaska has once again reminded us of the importance of disaster preparedness. Though it may feel like a distant issue, emergencies can strike anytime, anywhere. Being prepared is not an option but a necessity.

At Hanbit Hospital, we provide practical and detailed tips for evacuating patients with mobility challenges and their caregivers during emergencies. We hope this information will greatly help in protecting your precious family members.

---

### 1. When an earthquake occurs, the key moment is "after the shaking stops"!

If an earthquake strikes, first take cover under a table or next to a pillar in a safe spot and protect your head. Only move once the shaking has completely stopped to ensure safety. If the patient is in bed, remove nearby objects that could fall and help protect their head if possible. While medical staff in hospitals quickly move patients to safety, at home, the caregiver's immediate judgment and actions are critical.

---

### 2. "How do I move my mom (or dad)?" - Tips for evacuating patients with mobility challenges

This is often the most concerning issue. The evacuation method depends on the patient's condition.

#### - For wheelchair users:

  - **Never use elevators!** There is a risk of getting trapped due to power outages.

  - If possible, have at least two people lift and carry the wheelchair for safe transport. When descending stairs, lift the wheelchair's front wheels and carefully lower the back wheels first.

  - **Ask for help:** Actively seek assistance from neighbors or other family members. Cooperation is vital in emergencies.

#### - For bedridden or severely immobile patients:

  - If carrying the patient is difficult, use a sturdy blanket or sheet. Place it under the patient, grab both ends, and drag them to move. Be especially cautious to ensure the patient's head and neck remain straight.

  - **Temporary relocation to the safest area:** If immediate evacuation is impossible, move the patient to what you judge to be the safest location inside the house (e.g., bathroom, under a sturdy table) and call for rescue.

  - **Prepare a transport stretcher in advance:** If the patient's condition is critical and emergency transportation is essential, having a portable stretcher ready is a good idea.

---

### 3. Essentials to pack! "Customized emergency bag for patients"

Apart from a general emergency bag, additional items tailored to the patient's needs must be prepared.

- **Medications:** Pack at least 3 to 7 days' worth of all current medications and a copy of the prescription in a sealed plastic bag.

- **Medical supplies:** Include necessary items like diapers, pressure sore prevention supplies, ventilator filters, suction tips, glucose meters, and test strips.

- **Patient information card:** Prepare multiple handwritten cards with important medical information, such as the patient's diagnosis, medications, allergies, specific conditions, and blood type. These are useful in case mobile phones run out of battery.

- **Emergency food/water:** Pack liquid nutritional supplements or soft foods that are easy to digest and store, along with sufficient drinking water.

---

### 4. A calm "caregiver" ensures the patient's safety!

In disaster situations, if the caregiver panics, the patient may feel even more anxious. It's crucial to create an evacuation plan with your family in advance and assign roles to each member. Regularly check your emergency bag and update items according to the patient's changing condition.

"1 Trillion Won Exclusive Technology, Why A** Doesn't Sell E** to Country B""1조 원짜리 독점 기술, A**이 B국에 E** 안파는 이유"

☎️“Hey, isn’t Country A going too far? Isn’t this just a power play by a superpower?”

Just a few days ago, a friend said this during a conversation:
“Isn’t this ridiculous? Why should Country A stop the Netherlands from selling its own products?”

The extreme ultraviolet (EUV) lithography machine made by A*** is far more complex and sophisticated than any fighter jet.
Its core technologies include the light source developed by U.S.-based Cymer, a mirror system by Germany’s Zeiss, and process control technologies from the Netherlands.
In short, it’s a multinational technological product. If more than 15% of its components are of U.S. origin, the product is subject to U.S. export controls.

Now consider the German part:
The ultra-precise mirror created by Zeiss allows for error margins of just a few nanometers—an extraordinary engineering feat.
When the Dutch government blocked EUV exports to China in 2023, Germany also restricted the export of Zeiss technology independently.

🧠The Psychology: Is It Really Just “A Powerful Country Blocking the Weak”?

Most of us instinctively dislike the word “block.”
Especially when a superpower is the one doing the blocking, it feels inherently unfair.
But let’s get to the core issue here:

Those who own intellectual property (IP) have the legal and ethical right to control how it's used.

Just as South Korea works hard to protect Samsung or Hyundai’s innovations,
the United States wants to stop its technologies from being used in ways it deems risky.
Whether we’re talking about weapons or semiconductor tools, the principle is the same.

🤔Why do we feel it's unjust—even when we know it's not?

Saying "Country A is being unfair" feels emotionally satisfying.
But when you look closer, what’s happening is entirely legal, well-documented, and based on international regulations.
Sometimes, we assume everything in the world runs on raw power.

But in the case of A*** and the EUV machines, it’s actually a complex web of laws, patents, treaties, and geopolitical agreements.
A*** didn’t voluntarily block exports—it was because U.S. technology was embedded in the product, and without U.S. approval, exports weren’t legally allowed.
Meanwhile, the Dutch government also blocked exports on the grounds of national security.

Sometimes, the world might seem to turn on "the tyranny of superpowers"...
But often, there are deeper, more complicated reasons behind it.

So let’s ask this instead:
If the foundational technology behind the EUV machine belonged to China, would they have approved its export to a rival like Country A?

Calling a rightful exercise of intellectual property a 'power play' is not critical thinking—it's ignorance.

A letter from my mother found in tears: The last gift......

Liam Carter (34), a resident of Aberdeen, Scotland, was recently faced with one of the most heartbreaking tasks — sorting through his late mother’s belongings.
With a heavy heart, he carefully sifted through the items, each one filled with memories of his mother. Fighting back tears, he moved slowly, as if each step weighed more than the last.

While organizing his mother's kitchen drawers, he came across an ordinary-looking envelope. Absentmindedly, he opened it and found a folded lottery ticket — one of the many his mother had regularly purchased.
On the envelope was a short, familiar note, written in her handwriting:

"Saturday draw, don’t forget."

Liam remembered how his mother had the habit of leaving notes so she wouldn't miss the lottery draw. Seeing that small reminder brought a fresh wave of emotion over him.

As someone who had never really paid much attention to his mother’s little hobby, he quietly closed the kitchen drawer and finished organizing the house before returning home.

Days passed without much thought.
Then, on a quiet weekend visit back to his grandmother’s house with his daughter, they found themselves sharing old stories about Grandma.
It was during this heartfelt conversation that Liam realized the lottery draw date had already passed.

Remembering the ticket, he opened the lottery app on his phone and entered the numbers from the ticket dated for the Saturday draw on the 19th.

And then — the incredible happened.

A message flashed across his phone screen:
"You have won!"

The ticket his late mother had left behind had won — over £18,000 (about 30 million Korean won).

Though overjoyed, Liam's happiness was bittersweet.
The person who should have shared in this incredible moment — his mother — was no longer there.
Yet, deep down, he couldn’t shake the feeling that this was her final gift to him — a loving reminder from beyond.

New York, 1908: Pockets Instead of Cans: A Depression-Induced Tea Revolution.....1908

The Birth of the Tea Bag

New York, USA, 1908. It was a time when austerity measures were in full swing across all aspects of life due to the effects of the economic depression. Tea merchant Thomas Sullivan, in order to cut costs, sent tea to his customers in inexpensive silk pouches instead of expensive metal tins. However, something unexpected happened. Some customers who received the pouches, mistook them not just as simple packaging, but as containers for brewing tea, and put the entire pouch into boiling water. Surprisingly, this impromptu method of use was more convenient and cleaner than expected. Customers actually began to prefer this method, leading to the development of the tea bag as a new product.

Opening Eyes to Convenience: The Tea Bag Conquers the World The tea bag was not welcomed by everyone from the start. But the world was changing. Going through World War I and World War II, fast and convenient consumption became the spirit of the times, and the tea bags that American soldiers took to the battlefield spread throughout Europe after the war.

The Shock and Resistance of Tea Ceremony Culture The tea bag caused a significant shock to traditional tea ceremony cultures. In Japan, it was said to harm the spirit of the tea ceremony, 'making the most of every moment (一期一会, ichigo ichie)', while in China, the issue was the low-grade tea leaves used in tea bags. British aristocracy criticized tea bags as "consumption lacking in dignity". However, the world chose speed over dignity.

Conclusion: A Small Saving That Changed the World Thomas Sullivan's small saving choice during the depression, "pouches instead of cans", ultimately changed the world.

(Thomas Sullivan)
